When water enters the water filtration system, it is typically forced into the system through a pipe. These pipes use reverse osmosis, sedimentation, or distillation to filter the water. The sedimentation process forces the water through layers of sand or gravel, to trap large particles and sediments.

Reverse osmosis uses a semi-permeable membrane to trap particles smaller than a human hair, including chlorine and the most common contaminants. Finally, distillation boils the water and collects the resulting vapor.

Some water filtration systems also utilize activated carbon or a combination of various media to further reduce impurities and improve water quality. Activated carbon blocks impurities and absorbs harmful chemicals such as chlorine, lead, and pesticides.
